CPRM or Content Protection for Recordable Media is a mechanism for controlling the copying, moving and deletion of digital media on a host device, such as a personal computer, or other digital player. It's already used in specific removable media, and is now being proposed for inclusion in the ATA specification, for hard drives. Each CPRM-compatible ATA hard drive is individually signed, and authenticates compliant software.
The CPRM / CPPM Specification was designed to meet the robustness and renewability requirements of content owners while balancing the implementation needs of implementers of the technology. To accomplish these requirements the system defined by the specification relies on key management for interchangeable media, content encryption, and media-based renewability.
CPRM (Content Protection for Recordable Media) enables the distribution of music, video, and other premium content on SD cards and mobile handsets. With mobile devices playing an increasingly central role in entertainment and related services, the need for cost-effective, standards-based DRM solutions offering fast time-to-market is essential,” said Markus Tremmel, worldwide wireless ecosystem manager, Texas Instruments. Note that I know of yet, but remember that this is embedded in the device. If the device is CPRM enabled, it may only allow you to access the content with a CPRM tool. Now the game begins...the content is yours, but you can not use it. The CPRM command-set is most likely to be in the "RAW-IO" class of device access. Only the contiguous nature of the content to be placed on the media only makes this method
